A Curriculum for Civil Discourse
Youth Engage! is an interactive program that empowers young people to explore civic engagement, leadership, and how they can make a positive impact in their communities. Designed for grades 5–12, the program promotes respectful conversation and helps develop the skills needed to navigate differences and work toward common goals.
According to the Indiana Youth Institute, approximately one-third of all 6th-10th graders in the United States have participated in bullying, either as the bully, the target, or both. Research suggests that a lack of social and communication skills can lead to uncivil behavior. Youth Engage! addresses this by offering an interactive framework for civil discourse and conflict resolution.
The curriculum can be used in various settings, including schools, after-school programs, youth development programs, and faith-based groups.
Curriculum Goals:
Learn and Engage in Basic Civic Discourse
Develop Skills to Discuss Controversial Topics
Learn and Share Different Perspectives
Learn How to Build Consensus
Develop Empathy and Demonstrate Kindness
Develop Skills to Deal with Confrontation
The curriculum is organized into five units, but activities can be adapted to fit different timeframes. Sessions can range from short workshops to multi-day programming, depending on group size and age.
Each unit includes icebreakers and reflection activities to help participants process the content and provide feedback. Optional homework assignments allow for learning and application beyond the sessions, at the discretion of facilitators.
