The free event at Ivy Tech Community College Culinary and Conference Center, 2820 N. Meridian St., is hosted by two local nonprofits: the Indianapolis chapter of the National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Inc., and 100 Black Men of Indianapolis, Inc.
The conversation from 10 a.m. to noon includes discussions about health disparities, infant mortality and the rights of mothers.
In Indiana, Black women face higher maternal and infant mortality rates linked to systemic racism and a lack of access to health care. Several groups in Indianapolis are working to prevent mothers and babies from dying during pregnancy, childbirth or up to a year after. Connecting families with doulas is one common solution. These birth workers support and advocate for people in the delivery room.
